Koh Samui has no rail line, no bridge, and no runway the cheap carriers reach. So the overland route means a night down the peninsula to Surat Thani, then a catamaran across the Gulf. Plenty of travelers run it on purpose for the price. The Bangkok to Koh Samui overland combo takes 12 to 16 hours and costs $25 to $45 all in.
The direct Bangkok Airways flight covers the same distance in 65 minutes and runs roughly three to four times the combo fare. The bus and ferry combo via Surat Thani is the budget pick. The train and ferry combo is the comfort pick. The flight is the speed pick.
This guide tests each on total cost, total time, and the failure modes that make travelers miss their first ferry of the day. Check current combo schedules and fares before committing.

Each route has a different total cost and a different failure mode. Pick on the budget priority, not the headline duration.

Lomprayah is the dominant combo operator. The overnight bus departs Khao San Road at 19:00 or Mo Chit Bus Terminal at 19:30. The bus runs through the night to Chumphon, then transfers to a Donsak Pier shuttle, then the high-speed catamaran to Nathon. Total transit 12 to 13 hours including pier wait time.
Combo fare runs $35 to $45 all in. Online booking holds the floor. Counter buys at the bus terminal carry a 15 to 25 percent markup. Lock the combo ticket a day or two ahead in high season when seats fill out.
Train and ferry combo
Overnight train from Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Station to Surat Thani runs 8 to 10 hours depending on class. Second-class sleeper is the standard pick. From Phun Phin station (the rail terminus), operator shuttle to Donsak Pier runs 90 minutes, then the ferry to Nathon another 1 hour 30 minutes.
Total transit 12 to 14 hours. Total fare $30 to $55 depending on whether you book second-class fan, second-class AC sleeper, or first-class. The train is more comfortable than the bus. The trade is a slightly longer total transit and a longer pier wait if the train runs late.

Compare BKK to USM direct flights.
Bangkok Airways operates the only direct flight Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Koh Samui Airport (USM). Flight time 65 to 75 minutes. Fare $80 to $150 one way. Schedule density runs 6 to 8 daily departures in high season.
Door-to-door from central Bangkok 3 to 4 hours including the BKK transfer and the USM pickup. Compare Bangkok Airways flights to Samui against the budget flight-plus-ferry math before booking.
Budget flight to Surat Thani Airport plus ferry combo
Compare DMK to URT budget flights.
AirAsia and Nok Air operate budget flights Don Mueang (DMK) to Surat Thani Airport (URT) for $40 to $80 one way. Flight 1 hour 15 minutes. From URT, the Lomprayah combo shuttle runs to Donsak and the catamaran to Samui. Total transit 4 to 5 hours including the airport transfer.
This route lands at $50 to $80 all in, half the Bangkok Airways direct fare and 30 percent faster than the overnight bus combo. It’s the optimal price-to-time tradeoff for most travelers.
Bangkok departure points for the combo
Bangkok has multiple departure points for the south-bound combos, and the pickup confusion is one of the most cited mistakes on this route. Confirm the address on the booking before traveling to the terminal.
Khao San Road: Lomprayah’s backpacker-aligned pickup point, 19:00 departure for the overnight bus. The pickup point is the Lomprayah office near Soi Rambuttri, not the main Khao San strip. Allow 30 minutes to find it on first attempt.
Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal: 19:30 Lomprayah departure plus several other operators running similar combos. More frequent overall but further from central tourist areas. Grab from Sukhumvit runs 40 to 60 minutes in evening traffic.
Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station: the new (2023) main Bangkok rail terminal. Overnight south-bound trains depart from here, not Hua Lamphong. The Surat Thani train is the comfort option. Book second-class AC sleeper.
Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Bangkok Airways direct flight to Koh Samui Airport (USM). Don Mueang (DMK): AirAsia and Nok Air budget flights to Surat Thani Airport (URT). The two Bangkok airports are 35 km apart, so confirm which one your flight departs from before booking the airport transfer.
What to watch for on the Bangkok to Koh Samui route
The four common Bangkok to Koh Samui failure modes are the overnight bus arrival at Donsak Pier between 4am and 5am (before the first ferry, no food open), the Khao San versus Mo Chit pickup confusion that costs travelers their bus seat, the no-meal stretch on the overnight train that surprises first-time riders, and the budget flight to Surat Thani that requires a separate Donsak transfer not always bundled in the ticket. Confirm the pickup address and the transfer logistics in writing before booking.
