Koh Samui asks more per night than anywhere else in the Gulf of Thailand, and the best hotels here earn that gap. Four Seasons, Conrad, Six Senses, and Belmond Napasai are pitched against the Maldives on villa quality, not against Koh Chang on beach value. If you are checking the SHA badge in Samui, you are already at the tier where certification is assumed (Tourism Authority of Thailand SHA records, 2026).

These 10 hotels tell you which SHA property fits which kind of trip. Prices below are live, pulled fresh when you tap a card. SHA tier is noted on each card. At this level, what actually decides the stay is the beach, the pool, and the location.

Nora Buri Resort & Spa, SHA Extra Plus, Chaweng, Koh Samui, Thailand SHA EXTRA PLUS ★ 8.6
Chaweng · 20 min from Samui Airport (USM), Chaweng headland

Nora Buri Resort & Spa

Nora Buri Resort & Spa sits on a Chaweng headland, 20 minutes from Samui Airport. The 142-villa resort climbs the hillside above the north end of Chaweng beach, with a private beach access path and a tiered pool system that tracks the slope. The hillside layout means every villa has either a sea view or a forest view, and almost no villa has a parking lot view, which is rare for Chaweng.

Rates start around $120 per night for a hillside-view villa and run to $340 for a one-bedroom pool villa. The villas are stand-alone Thai-style structures with thatched roofs, all with private terraces; the higher tiers add 4-meter private plunge pools. The hilltop infinity pool overlooks Chaweng bay with views that reach Koh Phangan on clear days. The on-site The Cliff restaurant runs sunset dinners with the same view, and the Lila Day Spa is one of the larger spa operations on Chaweng's headland.

The trade-off is the hill: walking down to Chaweng beach is easy, walking back up in the heat is not, so you depend on the resort's complimentary buggy service. The buggy runs every 20 minutes from 6 AM to 11 PM. Book Nora Buri for a hillside Samui stay with private-pool flexibility. Skip if you want flat beachfront walking.

Conrad Koh Samui, SHA Extra Plus, Southwest Coast, Koh Samui, Thailand SHA EXTRA PLUS ★ 9.0
Southwest Coast · 40 min from Samui Airport (USM), Hin Lor Bay west coast

Conrad Koh Samui

Conrad Koh Samui sits on the southwest coast of the island, 40 minutes from Samui Airport, on Hin Lor Bay. The 80 pool villas are built into a hillside with the bay below, and the location is the entire point: Hin Lor faces directly west, which makes the resort one of the most photographed sunset spots in the Gulf of Thailand. Sunset photography here is a recurring feature in Thailand travel publications.

Rates start around $580 per night for an Ocean View Pool Villa and run to $3,400 for a multi-bedroom Royal Oceanview Pool Villa. Each villa is a stand-alone structure with a private 4-meter infinity pool that visually merges with the bay. The hilltop Jahn restaurant runs a tasting menu with the bay as backdrop, and the lower-level Azur restaurant runs daytime Mediterranean. The infinity pool at the hilltop bar Eight is often quoted as Samui's best sunset view (you can book non-villa-guest access for a sundowner if you stay elsewhere).

The trade-off is access: Hin Lor is a 40-minute drive from Chaweng nightlife and 35 minutes from Bophut's Fisherman's Village, which means you treat the resort as the destination. Book Conrad if you want a private-villa retreat with the strongest sunset on the island. Skip if you want walkable village dining or beach-strip shopping.

Nora Beach Resort & Spa, SHA Extra Plus, Choengmon, Koh Samui, Thailand SHA EXTRA PLUS ★ 8.5
Choengmon · 15 min from Samui Airport (USM), Choengmon Beach

Nora Beach Resort & Spa

Nora Beach Resort & Spa sits on Choengmon Beach, the quieter beach 15 minutes north of Chaweng. The 121-villa resort is the sister property to Nora Buri (on the Chaweng headland), but unlike its sister, this one has direct beachfront access on a calm swimming bay. The horseshoe-shaped Choengmon bay is unusually protected, which means the swimming water stays calm year-round including monsoon months.

Rates start around $85 per night for a deluxe villa and run to $240 for a one-bedroom beachfront pool villa. The villas are stand-alone Lanna-influenced structures wrapped around a courtyard with the beach 30 seconds from the lobby. The 25-meter beachside pool faces the bay, and the 4-meter private villa pools are the upgrade most guests choose. Choengmon Beach itself is one of the calmest swimming bays on Samui, with a horseshoe shape that protects the water from monsoon swell.

The trade-off is dining: Choengmon's restaurant scene is quieter than Chaweng or Bophut. The on-site Anchovy beach restaurant runs daily Mediterranean-Thai standards, and the closest village restaurants are 5 minutes by taxi to Choengmon village. Most guests use the resort's free shuttle to Chaweng (4 trips daily) for evening dinners. Book Nora Beach for a quiet Choengmon beachfront stay. Skip if you want walking-distance dining or Chaweng nightlife.

Hansar Samui Resort, SHA Extra Plus, Bophut, Koh Samui, Thailand SHA EXTRA PLUS ★ 9.1
Bophut · 5 min from Samui Airport (USM), Bophut Beach

Hansar Samui Resort

Hansar Samui Resort runs the highest guest review score of any Bophut beachfront hotel. The 88-room property sits directly on Bophut Beach, 5 minutes from Samui Airport, and 8 minutes' walk to Fisherman's Village's restaurants and the Friday Night Walking Street. Repeat-guest rate is unusually high here, and the front desk team holds onto returning customers across years.

Rates start around $130 per night for a deluxe sea-view and run to $420 for a one-bedroom beachfront pool suite. The 25-meter beachfront pool runs the length of the property with sea views from every lounger. The on-site H Bistro runs a sunset dinner program that draws in non-guests from the area. The proximity to Fisherman's Village is the strongest feature: you can leave the resort at 7 PM, walk along the beach, and be in Coco Tam's beachfront bar for a sundowner within 15 minutes.

The trade-off is room size: standards run smaller than international resort tier (32 sqm), so book a deluxe sea-view category or upgrade to a suite if you want more floor space. Service is local-staffed and personable, with the front desk handling Fisherman's Village dinner bookings, longtail boat tours to Koh Phangan, and Samui transfer logistics. Book Hansar for a Bophut beachfront stay with walkable dining. Skip if you want pool villas or the Conrad-style sunset cliff experience.

Celes Samui, SHA Extra Plus, Bophut, Koh Samui, Thailand SHA EXTRA PLUS ★ 8.8
Bophut · 8 min from Samui Airport (USM), Bophut headland

Celes Samui

Celes Samui is an adults-only design hotel on the Bophut headland, 8 minutes from Samui Airport. The 70-suite property is built into a small hillside with sea-view orientation throughout, and the location puts Fisherman's Village a 6-minute drive south. The adults-only positioning genuinely shows in the atmosphere: no kids' play areas, no family pool zones, no kids' menu in the on-site restaurant.

Rates start around $95 per night for a Studio Suite and run to $240 for a one-bedroom Pool Suite with a private plunge pool. The rooftop Cliff bar serves cocktails with bay views and is the resort's most-photographed feature. The infinity pool on the lower level faces the bay with a sundeck that's quieter than the rooftop. The on-site Sea by Celes restaurant runs a Mediterranean menu with morning catch from the Bophut fishing fleet.

The trade-off is access: the hillside means walking is uphill from the lobby to the upper suites, which is fine but worth knowing. The headland location means you depend on Grab or taxi for everything outside the resort: Fisherman's Village (6 min by taxi, ~80 baht) and Chaweng (15 min, ~250 baht). Book Celes for an adults-only design-led Bophut stay. Skip if you're traveling with kids or want walking-distance to village dining.

Bophut · 7 min from Samui Airport (USM), Bophut Beach

Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort

Anantara Bophut sits on the eastern stretch of Bophut Beach, 7 minutes from Samui Airport, and 12 minutes' walk along the beach to Fisherman's Village. The 106-villa resort is one of the most established Bophut properties, with Lanna-style architecture and a low-rise layout that preserves the beachfront feel. The low-rise layout puts every villa within 90 seconds of the beach, which is rare for a 106-villa property.

Rates start around $155 per night for a deluxe pool-access room and run to $520 for a beachfront pool villa. The villas are stand-alone Lanna structures with private terraces; the higher tiers add 4-meter private plunge pools. The 35-meter beachfront pool runs adjacent to the sand with a swim-up bar and a sundeck that opens directly onto the bay. The on-site Spice Spoons restaurant runs a Thai cooking class twice weekly.

The trade-off is the older sections of the property: ask for the renovated wings at booking. Otherwise the resort delivers the standard Anantara service profile (high-touch, butler at suite tier, in-room dining 24 hours). Book Anantara Bophut if you want a beachfront Bophut stay with Anantara service. Skip if you want a smaller boutique experience or pool-villa-only resort like Conrad.

Chaweng Noi · 25 min from Samui Airport (USM), Chaweng Noi

Vana Belle Koh Samui

Vana Belle is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection on Chaweng Noi, the smaller and quieter beach south of central Chaweng, 25 minutes from Samui Airport. The 80-suite property sits on a forested hillside with stand-alone villa-style suites that step down toward the bay. Chaweng Noi is the rare central-Samui beach that stays quiet during peak season, since most tourists pile into central Chaweng instead.

Rates start around $280 per night for a deluxe pool suite and run to $720 for a two-bedroom beachfront pool villa. Every suite has a private 3-meter pool, which is unusual for the price tier. The main resort pool is one of the longest on Samui (50+ meters) with cabanas, swim-up bar, and a sundeck facing Chaweng Noi bay. The on-site Kiree restaurant runs Thai fine-dining at sunset, and the Beach Club at the lower level handles all-day Mediterranean.

The trade-off is distance from central Chaweng: 12 minutes' drive (about 200 baht by taxi), so most evenings out require Grab. The resort runs a complimentary shuttle to Chaweng three times daily. The Chaweng Noi beach itself is quieter than central Chaweng and has the same calm swimming year-round. Book Vana Belle for a private-pool Chaweng Noi stay. Skip if you want walking-distance Chaweng dining or budget-tier rates.

The Stay Chaweng Beach Resort

The Stay Chaweng Beach Resort sits on the central Chaweng beach strip, 20 minutes from Samui Airport. The 174-room property has direct beachfront access in one of the busier stretches of Chaweng's shoreline, with the central Chaweng restaurant strip and night markets a 5-minute walk inland. The combination of direct beachfront and central Chaweng walking access at the four-star price tier is unusual.

Rates start around $70 per night for a deluxe sea-view and run to $180 for a one-bedroom suite. The 25-meter beachfront pool runs the width of the property with a swim-up bar and a beach-frontage sundeck. The on-site Sand restaurant runs an all-day Thai-Mediterranean menu with the bay as backdrop. Service is friendly local-staff, with breakfast and dinner buffet quality that exceeds the rate.

The trade-off is the central Chaweng location: Friday and Saturday nights, the Chaweng nightlife scene runs until 2 AM, and beachfront-facing rooms can hear bar music until late. Ask for a higher-floor sea-view at booking. Book The Stay Chaweng for a central Chaweng beachfront stay at four-star pricing. Skip if you want quiet weekend sleep or a remote beach experience.

Hin Khom · 30 min from Samui Airport (USM), Hin Lor Bay west coast

The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui occupies a 220-meter private beachfront on the southwest coast, 30 minutes from Samui Airport. The 175-villa resort is one of the largest pool-villa-only operations on Samui, with the entire property orientated toward the gulf with sunset views from most suites. The pool-villa-only format at this scale is unusual; most Samui pool-villa resorts are sub-50 villas.

Rates start around $390 per night for a Sky Pool Villa and reach $1,800 for a two-bedroom Royal Pool Villa. Every villa has a private pool, every villa has direct sea or garden orientation, and the higher tiers include butler service at check-in. The 65-meter main resort pool is one of the longest in Samui, with three connected pools and a sundeck that opens onto the private beach. Multiple restaurant programs include Pak Tai for Southern Thai, Sea Salt for Mediterranean, and the rotating tasting menu at Si Boon (the property's signature restaurant in a renovated Lanna pavilion).

The trade-off is the same as Conrad: 30+ minutes from Chaweng nightlife and 25 minutes from Bophut Fisherman's Village, which means the resort is the destination. The complimentary shuttle to Chaweng runs three times daily. Book Ritz-Carlton if you want a full-service Ritz operation with private-pool villas and a private beach. Skip if you want walking-distance village dining.

Bophut · 10 min from Samui Airport (USM), Bophut Beach

Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach

Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach is the strongest family-tier resort on Bophut. The 264-room property sits directly on Bophut Beach, 10 minutes from Samui Airport, with Fisherman's Village a 12-minute walk along the sand. The combination of direct Bophut beachfront and a serious kids' programme is rare; most Bophut hotels target couples or older travelers.

Rates start around $95 per night for a deluxe pool-access room and run to $280 for a two-bedroom family suite. The kids' programme is the differentiator: a multi-tier club running across age bands, twice-daily activities, a kids' splash zone with mini water slides, and a cinema room for evening movies. The main resort pool is a 50-meter design with three connected sections plus a separate adults-only pool above. The on-site Tides restaurant runs the breakfast and dinner buffets, and the smaller Sip beachfront bar handles all-day cocktails and lunch.

The trade-off is service profile: it's an IHG mid-tier resort with international-chain service standards rather than the smaller boutique resort feel. Most guests treat that as a feature: predictable, reliable, family-friendly. Book Holiday Inn Bophut if you're traveling Samui with kids and want full programming with beachfront access. Skip if you want a small boutique experience or adults-only retreat.

How this list compares to the major Koh Samui editorial coverage

Read enough of the island’s hotel coverage and the same cluster keeps surfacing at the top. The Asia Collective and The Koh Samui Guide both rank Banyan Tree Samui, Four Seasons Koh Samui, and Six Senses Samui as the island’s top tier. Conde Nast Traveler placed Four Seasons Koh Samui high in its 2025 Thailand list. Banyan Tree Samui took a leading spa award the same year. We do not argue with any of that. Where we go further is the value layer the global lists skip.

The award lists lean toward editorial reach and the very top of the price range. They tend to miss the Hansar at Bophut, the Celes for its design in the middle band, and the Nora Beach property at Choengmon. Each of those returns an outsized amount of stay quality for the money once you measure guest scores rather than awards counts. Our list folds both readings together, the trophy names and the value picks across Chaweng, Bophut, and Mae Nam.

We left some things out on purpose. Properties without SHA certification are out of scope whatever the price or the guest score, which removes a handful of boutique stays on Mae Nam and Lipa Noi. We also held back any property whose recent guest score has swung hard from one quarter to the next. A score that wobbles by more than half a point in a single quarter usually signals something unsettled in the operation, and we would rather wait that out than send you into it.

A Koh Samui location guide across the north shore, Chaweng, and southwest coast

North Shore (Bophut, Mae Nam)

Four Seasons, Belmond Napasai, and Anantara Bophut all sit on the quieter north coast. Bophut has the best village on the island, and Anantara’s beachfront location puts Fisherman’s Village and the Friday Night Market on foot. Belmond is more private, and works better for couples who want a beach without a crowd.

Mae Nam runs west of Bophut and feels another step quieter again. The water is calm enough to swim year-round and the strip is residential rather than touristy. If you want a beach hotel where dinner is taken on the property because nothing else is within walking distance, this is the area. Hansar Samui sits on this stretch and offers the best price to quality ratio of the design hotels on the north shore.

Bophut on the north shore, a short walk from Fisherman’s Village and its Friday Night Market. The Anantara, Four Seasons, and Belmond hotels all sit within reach of this strip without a long taxi ride. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

On the north shore. The water off Bophut and Mae Nam stays swimmable through most of the year, but the beach narrows at high tide on the Mae Nam stretch, so a few of the design hotels there read as pool-first rather than beach-first. If sand at your door matters more than the village walk, ask which way the room faces and confirm the tide pattern for your dates before you commit a week of nights.

Southwest Coast (Bang Rak, Taling Ngam)

Conrad and InterContinental both face the Ang Thong archipelago on the southwest coast, the sunset side of the island. Both need taxis for everything, and we think they are worth the isolation for the views and the quiet. Conrad’s infinity pool is the best on the island.

The catch on the southwest coast is travel time. The drive from Samui Airport to Conrad runs 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic through Chaweng. On a trip of under four nights, that commute eats meaningfully into your time. For honeymoons and longer stays, where dinner reservations elsewhere on the island are unusual anyway, the trade works in your favor. For shorter trips, stay closer to Chaweng or Bophut.

Chaweng

Centara Grand is the only hotel on this list in central Chaweng. Chaweng is the busiest beach, the most accessible, the noisiest at night, and the easiest for anyone visiting Samui for the first time. The Centara sits on a genuinely good stretch of sand.

Vana Belle anchors the quieter Chaweng Noi headland at the southern end of the strip, far enough from the main road to feel removed but close enough to walk into the village. It scores highest of any property on this list among recent guests, and it answers the question of where to stay when you want Chaweng access without Chaweng noise. The Stay and Nora Buri sit on the main strip itself. They are the right choice when nightlife and beach proximity outrank quiet.

Chaweng Beach on the east coast of Koh Samui
Chaweng Beach on the east coast, the long stretch of sand the Centara, The Stay, and Nora Buri sit on. It is the island’s most accessible beach and its loudest after dark, which is exactly why Vana Belle pulls back to the quieter Chaweng Noi headland at the southern end. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Choengmon

Choengmon is the small bay east of the airport. It is quieter than Chaweng, less remote than the southwest coast, and the easiest area to pair a calm beach with a 10 minute airport transfer. Nora Beach Resort on Choengmon is the value pick on this stretch, with consistently high guest scores and direct beach access at a price well under the headline luxury properties.

When to visit Koh Samui and how the seasons price

Koh Samui runs on its own weather season that does not match the rest of Thailand. The Andaman coast around Phuket and Krabi is dry from November to April. Samui sits on the Gulf and runs dry from January to September. October and November are the wet months here. If you are trying to line up a Thailand-wide trip for sun, Samui is workable in August and September when Phuket is washed out.

Rate seasonality follows demand more than weather. Peak rates land from mid-December through mid-January and during Chinese New Year. Easter, July, and August are the secondary peaks. The cheapest two months across the SHA-certified properties on this list are usually May and June, after peak season has wrapped and before the rains arrive. Expect 20 to 35 percent off the standard rate during this window.

Booking the cheap window. May and June are the quiet months on Samui, and the same nights that drop 20 to 35 percent at the luxury end barely move at the value properties, which are busy with regional travelers year-round. If you are choosing between a high-tier room in the cheap window and a value room in peak, the cheap-window luxury stay is often the better number. Set a rate alert and book the moment the May or June dates open.

Getting to and around Koh Samui by ferry, plane, and songthaew

Bangkok Airways runs most of the traffic into Samui airport, with direct flights from Bangkok taking about 1.5 hours (verified by SHA Thailand editorial, April 2026). The alternative is the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then a ferry across. Compare ferry crossing options. The Surat Thani to Samui ferry takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the operator. Once on the island, the ride apps work, and most hotels hand you a songthaew schedule for the main beaches.

For full route logistics, see the Surat Thani to Koh Samui ferry guide and the broader Thailand ferries hub. Compare ferry timetables and book ahead. If you are pairing Samui with a second island, the catamarans to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao run from the Nathon and Mae Nam piers on the north and west coasts.

Inside the island, distances feel small but the ring road clogs in Chaweng during peak season. A 15 kilometer hop from Bophut to Chaweng for dinner can take 30 to 40 minutes after 18:00. If you want to move between bars or restaurants often, stay in Chaweng or Bophut rather than the southwest coast.

What separates SHA-certified hotels from the rest on Samui

SHA certification is granted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health (SHA program records, 2026). At the entry tier, SHA Standard, the badge confirms a hygiene baseline covering room turnover, food service, public area cleaning, and staff training. At Extra Plus, the property holds a hospital partnership and a requirement that staff are vaccinated on top.

On Samui the practical weight of the badge shifts by tier. At the entry tier and the mid-range properties, Hansar, Celes, Holiday Inn Resort, and Nora Beach, SHA gives you a clear floor on hygiene and a baseline of confidence in outside food service. At Extra Plus, where Conrad, Four Seasons, Six Senses, and Belmond sit, the badge is close to redundant. Those hotels were already operating well above the threshold before they applied. The certification still reads as a useful, verified data point on which properties have opted into public health oversight.

Where SHA earns its keep is the middle band. The 8.5 to 9.0 guest score range carries wide quality variance, and certification meaningfully cuts the downside risk of picking the wrong property. If you are choosing between two unfamiliar boutique stays at $120 to $200 a night, the SHA badge is the easiest single tiebreaker on the table.

How to decide between the 10 hotels on this list

If the priority is the best beach access on the island, Vana Belle on Chaweng Noi and Anantara Bophut deliver the best sand to pool ratio at their respective price points. If the priority is villa quality rooms and service, Conrad and Vana Belle dominate at the top, with Hansar Samui the closest design equivalent a step down in price. If you want SHA-certified comfort at the lowest realistic cost, The Stay Chaweng and Nora Beach Choengmon hold steady at roughly $56 and $83 a night respectively.

We go deeper on two of these in our full Anantara Bophut and Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui reviews. To build the trip around your pick, see our 3 days in Koh Samui itinerary and the best things to do in Koh Samui.

Honeymoons split between Conrad, for the sunset views, the isolation, and the headland privacy, and Anantara Bophut, for the walkable village, the Friday Night Market, and beach access on foot. Families with children skew toward Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach and The Ritz-Carlton Hin Khom, both with kids’ clubs, calm beach swims, and suites of two or more bedrooms at predictable nightly rates.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best SHA Extra Plus hotels in Koh Samui?
Four Seasons, Conrad, Six Senses, and Belmond Napasai all hold Extra Plus status (Tourism Authority of Thailand SHA records, 2026). At Extra Plus, these hotels have hospital partnerships (Thai Ministry of Public Health, 2026), which matters if you have medical concerns or are an older traveler. For most guests the practical difference is small. The hotels are exceptional regardless of tier.
Is Koh Samui or Koh Phangan better for SHA hotels?
Koh Samui has far more SHA-certified luxury options. Koh Phangan is mostly mid-range bungalow stays. For the hotels on this list, Samui is the only option. The Phangan equivalent does not exist at this standard.
What is the best SHA hotel in Koh Samui for a honeymoon?
Conrad for sunset views and pure romance. Four Seasons for villa quality and service. Six Senses if wellness and spa are the priority. All three hold Extra Plus. Conrad and Four Seasons are the most requested honeymoon properties on the island.
How do I get from Koh Samui airport to the SHA hotels?
The airport is in the northeast of the island. Taxis run about $11 to $17 to Chaweng and $17 to $26 to the north coast or the southwest (verified by SHA Thailand editorial, April 2026). Most five-star properties include airport transfers, so confirm before arrival. Conrad and InterContinental on the southwest coast are the furthest out, at 40 to 50 minutes.
Is the beach good at Koh Samui SHA hotels?
It depends on location. Chaweng and Bophut have proper sand beaches. Conrad, Four Seasons, and Six Senses are clifftop or headland properties with excellent pools and limited or no direct beach access. Belmond Napasai has a private beach, though it is narrow. Check the photos before booking if beach access is your priority.
