Read enough of the island’s hotel coverage and the same cluster keeps surfacing at the top. The Asia Collective and The Koh Samui Guide both rank Banyan Tree Samui, Four Seasons Koh Samui, and Six Senses Samui as the island’s top tier. Conde Nast Traveler placed Four Seasons Koh Samui high in its 2025 Thailand list. Banyan Tree Samui took a leading spa award the same year. We do not argue with any of that. Where we go further is the value layer the global lists skip.
The award lists lean toward editorial reach and the very top of the price range. They tend to miss the Hansar at Bophut, the Celes for its design in the middle band, and the Nora Beach property at Choengmon. Each of those returns an outsized amount of stay quality for the money once you measure guest scores rather than awards counts. Our list folds both readings together, the trophy names and the value picks across Chaweng, Bophut, and Mae Nam.
We left some things out on purpose. Properties without SHA certification are out of scope whatever the price or the guest score, which removes a handful of boutique stays on Mae Nam and Lipa Noi. We also held back any property whose recent guest score has swung hard from one quarter to the next. A score that wobbles by more than half a point in a single quarter usually signals something unsettled in the operation, and we would rather wait that out than send you into it.
A Koh Samui location guide across the north shore, Chaweng, and southwest coast
North Shore (Bophut, Mae Nam)
Four Seasons, Belmond Napasai, and Anantara Bophut all sit on the quieter north coast. Bophut has the best village on the island, and Anantara’s beachfront location puts Fisherman’s Village and the Friday Night Market on foot. Belmond is more private, and works better for couples who want a beach without a crowd.
Mae Nam runs west of Bophut and feels another step quieter again. The water is calm enough to swim year-round and the strip is residential rather than touristy. If you want a beach hotel where dinner is taken on the property because nothing else is within walking distance, this is the area. Hansar Samui sits on this stretch and offers the best price to quality ratio of the design hotels on the north shore.
On the north shore. The water off Bophut and Mae Nam stays swimmable through most of the year, but the beach narrows at high tide on the Mae Nam stretch, so a few of the design hotels there read as pool-first rather than beach-first. If sand at your door matters more than the village walk, ask which way the room faces and confirm the tide pattern for your dates before you commit a week of nights.
Southwest Coast (Bang Rak, Taling Ngam)
Conrad and InterContinental both face the Ang Thong archipelago on the southwest coast, the sunset side of the island. Both need taxis for everything, and we think they are worth the isolation for the views and the quiet. Conrad’s infinity pool is the best on the island.
The catch on the southwest coast is travel time. The drive from Samui Airport to Conrad runs 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic through Chaweng. On a trip of under four nights, that commute eats meaningfully into your time. For honeymoons and longer stays, where dinner reservations elsewhere on the island are unusual anyway, the trade works in your favor. For shorter trips, stay closer to Chaweng or Bophut.
Chaweng
Centara Grand is the only hotel on this list in central Chaweng. Chaweng is the busiest beach, the most accessible, the noisiest at night, and the easiest for anyone visiting Samui for the first time. The Centara sits on a genuinely good stretch of sand.
Vana Belle anchors the quieter Chaweng Noi headland at the southern end of the strip, far enough from the main road to feel removed but close enough to walk into the village. It scores highest of any property on this list among recent guests, and it answers the question of where to stay when you want Chaweng access without Chaweng noise. When to visit Koh Samui and how the seasons price
Koh Samui runs on its own weather season that does not match the rest of Thailand. The Andaman coast around Phuket and Krabi is dry from November to April. Samui sits on the Gulf and runs dry from January to September. October and November are the wet months here. If you are trying to line up a Thailand-wide trip for sun, Samui is workable in August and September when Phuket is washed out.
Rate seasonality follows demand more than weather. Peak rates land from mid-December through mid-January and during Chinese New Year. Easter, July, and August are the secondary peaks. Getting to and around Koh Samui by ferry, plane, and songthaew
Bangkok Airways runs most of the traffic into Samui airport, with direct flights from Bangkok taking about 1.5 hours (verified by SHA Thailand editorial, April 2026). The alternative is the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then a ferry across. Compare ferry crossing options. The Surat Thani to Samui ferry takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the operator. Once on the island, the ride apps work, and most hotels hand you a songthaew schedule for the main beaches.

Inside the island, distances feel small but the ring road clogs in Chaweng during peak season. A 15 kilometer hop from Bophut to Chaweng for dinner can take 30 to 40 minutes after 18:00. If you want to move between bars or restaurants often, stay in Chaweng or Bophut rather than the southwest coast.

On Samui the practical weight of the badge shifts by tier. At the entry tier and the mid-range properties, Hansar, Celes, Holiday Inn Resort, and Nora Beach, SHA gives you a clear floor on hygiene and a baseline of confidence in outside food service. At Extra Plus, where Conrad, Four Seasons, Six Senses, and Belmond sit, the badge is close to redundant. Those hotels were already operating well above the threshold before they applied. The certification still reads as a useful, verified data point on which properties have opted into public health oversight.
Where SHA earns its keep is the middle band. The 8.5 to 9.0 guest score range carries wide quality variance, and certification meaningfully cuts the downside risk of picking the wrong property.
