The bus to Sukhothai does not stop at the ruins. It stops at Sukhothai Bus Terminal, 12 km short of them. The shared songthaew that covers that gap runs 06:00 to 17:00 and then finishes for the night. Fare and duration are the wrong numbers to book this route on.

Book backward from the arrival instead. Of the twelve scheduled services a day out of Mo Chit 2, four are timetabled to land after that connection has stopped. Two of those land after the Historical Park has closed its gates.

If you want a usable half day at the ruins on arrival, take an early departure. Before you pick one, check current departures and fares on the corridor.

Mo Chit 2 is the Northern Bus Terminal at Chatuchak, on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road. It is not BTS Mo Chit. The station and the terminal sit 2.1 to 2.3 km apart, and travelers who follow the station name walk into the wrong building.

Wat Mahathat sits in the central zone, the part of the park that charges $6 for foreign visitors. This is the 12 km your bus ticket does not cover.

Bangkok to Sukhothai at a glance, and the two modes without a transfer

Roughly 430 km separate the two. The road figure moves between 427 and 476 km depending on the source. Our reading is that the spread tracks routing rather than sloppy data. Some services run via Phitsanulok and some take the direct northern line. The same split explains why scheduled times run from 6 hours 30 minutes to 8. Treat the running time as the number that matters and let the distance arguments go.

What each option costs and where it puts you down.

  • Sukhothai Win Tour, first class (ป.1): THB 432, about $12. VIP is THB 504. About 6 hours 30 minutes scheduled, Mo Chit 2 to Sukhothai Bus Terminal.
  • Phitsanulok Yanyon, Route 965: THB 394, about $11 in basic class. Economy is THB 460. A flat 8 hours via Phitsanulok, terminating at Sukhothai Historical Park.
  • Khao San Tara Tour coach: around THB 700, about $20. Scheduled at 9 hours 30 minutes. Boards at the Khao San Travel Mart and the National Stadium pickup, not at a bus terminal.
  • Flight, Suvarnabhumi to Sukhothai Airport: THB 1,260 to 1,500, roughly $32 to $42. 1 hour 20 minutes in the air, two to three departures a day between 07:00 and 16:00.
  • Airport shuttle from THS: THB 250 to 300 per person over the 27 to 30 km into town. Timed to the airline’s own arrivals.
  • Private car or minivan: from about $213 per vehicle, roughly 6 hours door to door, hotel pickup included.
  • Train: not available. Sukhothai has no railway station.
  • Arrival point for almost every bus: Sukhothai Bus Terminal (สถานีขนส่งผู้โดยสาร จ.สุโขทัย), about 2 km from New Sukhothai and 12 km from the Historical Park.

Two lines in that list carry the whole decision. The cheapest fare on the corridor also happens to be the service that delivers you to the park gates. The fastest scheduled coach drops you 12 km short of them and hands you a connection with an opening hour.

Which Bangkok terminal the Sukhothai bus actually leaves from

Mo Chit 2, written in Thai listings as สถานีขนส่งผู้โดยสารกรุงเทพ จตุจักร (หมอชิต2). It runs more than 50 ticket counters, and the Win Tour windows are numbers 5 and 6 on floor 1. That matters on a route where the operator you buy from moves the price more than the seat class does.

Getting to the building is the part travelers underestimate. From BTS Mo Chit you need a cab across those 2.1 km, which runs about THB 70. From MRT Kamphaeng Phet exit 1 a motorbike taxi does it for roughly THB 40. Our guide to the BTS covers the run north from the Sukhumvit line. The best SHA hotels in Bangkok roundup is sorted by which line each address actually sits on.

You do not need to book this corridor ahead on a normal weekday. Mo Chit 2 sells from the counters all day and roughly twelve services run it. Book ahead for Songkran, for New Year and for Thai public holidays. The whole country moves back to its home province at once and the northern departures fill first. If your dates are fixed and your group is four or more, lock the seats. If you are two people on a flexible Tuesday, walk up to window 5.

What the fare buys, and which operator sits at each end

English aggregators publish a flat spread of THB 330 to 700 for this route with no operator attached to either end. That is the least useful way to present it, because the fare tracks the company rather than the class. Route 965 sells at THB 394 in basic and Win Tour sells first class at THB 432. Those two seats are separated by about twenty minutes of counter queue and nothing else.

The Khao San coach is the one worth understanding before you buy it. It solves a real problem. The Rambuttri and Khao San strip is a long way from Chatuchak, and this coach boards you where you already sleep. Published fares put it near THB 700, against roughly THB 400 at the Mo Chit 2 counters. Its scheduled run is 9 hours 30 minutes against 6 hours 30 on the Thai operator, and its last departure is around 16:00.

That trade is fair for a group with luggage on a fixed morning, and poor for anyone with a flexible day and a working phone. Riders also report that punctuality varies across this corridor in both directions, with journeys running long and, more disruptively, running early. Build slack into whatever you plan for the evening you arrive.

The City Pillar Shrine sits beside the Grand Palace, on the Rattanakosin side of the river. Anything based this far west needs a real transfer window built in before a 07:00 call at Mo Chit 2.

Which services stop at Sukhothai Historical Park instead of the town

Phitsanulok Yanyon’s Route 965 sells Sukhothai Historical Park as a bookable destination in its own right. That single detail removes the 12 km transfer, the wait at Platform 22 and the $1 songthaew from the trip. It is also the cheapest fare anyone quotes on the corridor. If you have booked a room in Old Sukhothai, this is the ticket to buy.

Read the timetable before you commit, because the convenience is priced in hours. Route 965 is booked at a flat 8 hours and runs via Phitsanulok, which is what the extra ninety minutes buys. Departures leave Mo Chit 2 at 07:00, 12:00 and 14:00, arriving 15:00, 20:00 and 22:00.

Only the first of those three lands while the park is still open and the shared transport is still running. Other operators also call at Old Sukhothai near the park gates before continuing to the new town terminal, but it is not universal across the corridor. Confirm the stop at the counter rather than assuming it. The The Longest Way Home guide to reaching Sukhothai is the one page on this SERP that flags the Old Sukhothai call at all.

The arrival clock decides which departure you book

Apply the 06:00 to 17:00 songthaew window to the timetable and the twelve daily services sort themselves into two groups. A 07:00 departure lands around 15:00 with two hours of the connection still running, the park open until 19:30, and hotel desks staffed. That is the shape of a usable arrival day.

The 12:00 and 14:00 Route 965 services land at 20:00 and 22:00, after the last shared songthaew and after the park has closed. A tuk tuk still runs at those hours for around THB 150 to the park area, so the arrival is workable. It is just no longer cheap, and nothing you came for is open.

The departure to think hardest about is the late evening first class run at 20:00. It is booked through Sukhothai and on into Si Satchanalai at 03:15, which places the Sukhothai call somewhere in the small hours rather than at a stated time. Some riders report being set down at the Historical Park at around 3am. Read it as an overnight arrival, not an evening one, and have a room booked from the night before if you take it.

Getting from Sukhothai Bus Terminal to the ruins

The terminal handles arrivals well. There are eight Win Tour windows, a left luggage office open 08:30 to 16:30 and a signposted songthaew platform. What it is not is close to anything. New Sukhothai is 2 km east and the Historical Park is 12 km west, so plan a second leg on arrival.

What the last leg costs from the bays:

  • Shared songthaew from Platform 22 to the Historical Park: THB 30 per person, running 06:00 to 17:00 daily.
  • Shared taxi into New Sukhothai: THB 10 per person, from outside the station exit.
  • Tuk tuk to the park: around THB 150, and around THB 60 into town.
  • Bicycle hire near the park: THB 30 to 50 a day, from shops closing between 17:30 and 18:00.
  • Park entry, central zone: THB 200 for foreign visitors, plus THB 10 to bring a bicycle in.
  • Opening hours: 06:30 to 19:30 daily, and to 21:00 on Saturdays with the floodlights on.

Sukhothai is two towns and the confusion costs people a day. New Sukhothai is where the buses, the banks, the night market and most of the cheap rooms are. Old Sukhothai is the village at the park gates, 12 km west, where you can walk out of your guesthouse and be at Wat Mahathat in ten minutes. Neither is wrong. Book the new town if you want restaurants and an easy onward bus. Book the old town if the ruins are the whole reason you came. Never assume a room described as Sukhothai is within cycling distance of the park.

The central zone is flat and compact enough to ride in half a day. That is why a bicycle at THB 30 beats a tuk tuk here.

Is the flight worth roughly four times the bus fare

Bangkok Airways is the only carrier on this route and it flies from Suvarnabhumi alone. Two to three departures a day cover the hop in 1 hour 20 minutes, from about THB 1,260 to 1,500. Sukhothai Airport is privately owned by the airline that built it in 1996. That is why nobody else serves it, and why there is no low cost option out of Don Mueang.

The eighty minutes in the air is not the door to door number. THS sits 27 to 30 km north of the new town and the realistic transfer is the airline side minivan shuttle at THB 250 to 300. That shuttle exists because the flights do, so a missed connection has no fallback service to catch. Call it about three hours from Suvarnabhumi to a Sukhothai hotel door, against six and a half to eight on the coach.

Our call is that the fare gap only pays for itself on a trip of four days or fewer. On that length, a ground day is a fifth of everything you have. On a longer run north the coach costs you an afternoon you were going to spend moving anyway. If you want to price it against the bus, compare live fares on the route before you commit to a departure time.

Is there a train from Bangkok to Sukhothai

No. Sukhothai has no railway station and never has, and the nearest track is Phitsanulok, roughly 60 to 70 km southeast. Every aggregator that ranks for this question keeps a train on its list of modes anyway, then spends the page explaining the workaround.

Here is the workaround, so you can rule it out properly. Seven daily services run from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Phitsanulok. They take 3 hours 50 minutes to 6 hours 20 minutes, at THB 211 to 315 in second class. Phitsanulok railway station is not the bus terminal, so a local bus or tuk tuk sits between the legs. A connecting bus then covers the last hour for THB 50 to 115, running frequently between 07:00 and 19:00.

Add it up and the rail itinerary is a three leg day that costs more than a direct coach and saves nothing. It is worth doing only if you want the northern line for its own sake, or if you are breaking the trip in Phitsanulok anyway. The GeckoRoutes breakdown of the Phitsanulok connection lays the timings out if you want to build a day around it. Our Ayutthaya transport guide covers the one northern trip where the train genuinely is the right answer.

Where to stay when you reach Sukhothai

Most travelers base themselves in one of two places. New Sukhothai keeps you near the night market, the restaurants and the onward bus bays, and it is where the cheaper guesthouses cluster. Old Sukhothai puts you at the park gates for early light and evening floodlights, at the cost of a 12 km run for dinner options.

For the Bangkok night before an early call at Mo Chit 2, the best SHA hotels in Bangkok roundup is the hub to work from. Anything on the Sukhumvit line reaches the terminal without an interchange. Our 3 days in Bangkok itinerary and the things to do in Bangkok roundup handle the city days before you head north.

If Sukhothai is one stop on a longer run, the Chiang Mai to Sukhothai route covers the onward leg. The Chiang Mai transport guide covers the long overnight coach north. Our overview of getting around Thailand sets out the national picture, and the 10 day Thailand itinerary shows where the ruins fit against the islands. The guide to Thai ferry routes covers the crossings if you continue south. If you would rather not assemble the arrival day yourself, compare guided runs around the Historical Park.
