You are on a longtail boat at 04:30. The engine idles and the boat leaves the Ao Nang Pier in darkness. The fisherman at the tiller does not use GPS. He angles the bow toward a gap in the limestone silhouettes you cannot yet distinguish from the sky. Then the light changes. The headland separates from the darkness and turns orange at its peak, and the water ahead shifts from black to a color with no exact name in English. That is the moment Krabi earns its reputation.

Three days in Krabi is the minimum to do the place properly. Day 1 covers the 4-Islands circuit by speedboat. Day 2 puts you on Railay Beach with optional rock climbing and a sunset longtail. Day 3 is the Tiger Cave Temple summit at dawn followed by the Emerald Pool in the afternoon. Each day has a distinct rhythm. None of them require much planning if you know the logistics in advance.

We have run this itinerary three times: once in December, once in February, and once in late April at the edge of the wet season. The bones hold in all three conditions. The April run required swapping the 4-Islands speedboat for a longtail tour due to sea conditions, which added 40 minutes but cost less. We flag the seasonal adjustments below in each day section.

Railay Beach, Krabi. Accessible by longtail only. The 15-minute boat from Ao Nang Pier is the only way in unless you arrive by kayak from Phra Nang.

What to know before you arrive

Krabi Town is 45 minutes by road from Krabi Airport (KBV). Ao Nang, where most visitors base themselves, is 35 minutes from the airport. We compare shared vans and pre-book every trip. The airport taxi queue charged THB 600 for the same Ao Nang trip on our first visit in December. The shared van costs THB 180 per person.

Dry season runs November through April. The sea is calm, visibility is high, and the 4-Islands circuit operates daily. March and April are the hottest months, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius by 13:00. We carry 2 liters of water per person on any day that includes Tiger Cave or island tours in these months.

Rainy season runs May through October. Tours still operate but speedboats may switch to longtail-only routes when whitecaps appear. Prices drop by 20 to 30 percent. The jungle paths on Railay are better for photography in the rainy season with fewer visitors. The Tiger Cave summit walk is more comfortable in the cooler humidity.

Pack for this itinerary specifically:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen : chemical sunscreen is banned at Phra Nang Cave Beach
  • Rash guard or long-sleeve swim shirt : for the 4-Islands boat days
  • Reef shoes or sport sandals : rocky island landings on Poda and Chicken Island
  • Dry bag : the bow of the longtail takes spray in chop
  • Headlamp : the Tiger Cave stairs start before dawn if you go early

Entry fees: Tiger Cave Temple is free. Emerald Pool charges THB 200 per person. Phra Nang Cave Beach has no entry fee. Railay West beach has no entry fee. Snorkel gear is included in most 4-Islands tour prices but worth checking at booking.

Day 1, 4-Islands tour to Phra Nang Cave Beach

The 09:00 speedboat departure from Ao Nang Pier is the standard for the 4-Islands circuit. We arrived at the pier at 08:40 on our February run and watched three longtail boats load before our speedboat was ready. The speedboat takes 20 minutes to Chicken Island. The longtail option takes 45 minutes to the first stop but gives you a better view of the limestone karst as you approach.

The circuit covers four islands in sequence. Chicken Island (Ko Kai) is the first stop, named for a rock formation visible from the west side. Snorkeling here runs 20 to 30 minutes. The coral is shallow and beginner-friendly. Tup Island (Ko Tup) connects to Ko Mah by a sand bar at low tide. The tide timing is critical: arrive at low tide and you walk the bar. At high tide, the bar is submerged and the two islands are separate. Most tour operators schedule this stop to hit the low tide window between 10:00 and 11:30.

Poda Island (Ko Poda) is the lunch stop on most itineraries. A beach restaurant serves grilled fish and pad thai at the north end of the island. The reef on the east side of Poda has better coral health than Chicken Island. We snorkeled here for 40 minutes on our December trip and counted 12 species of reef fish.

The final stop is Phra Nang Cave Beach. This is Railay’s most famous beach and accessible only by boat or by kayak from Railay West. The limestone cave at the south end of the beach contains a Hindu shrine dedicated to the spirit of a princess. Wooden phalluses line the cave walls as offerings from local fishermen requesting safe passage and good catches.

Phra Nang Cave is an active spiritual site. Remove shoes before entering. Do not touch the offerings or move the carved figures. Photography inside the cave is acceptable but flash photography in the innermost chamber is disrespectful to other visitors. We observed several tourists ignored this in February and local guides asked them to leave.

The return to Ao Nang Pier completes by 14:00 on the 09:00 departure. This leaves the afternoon for rest, Ao Nang beach walking, or a late lunch at Ko Tung seafood restaurant before dinner. Book the Day 1 4-Islands tour via our activities partner to confirm the 09:00 slot.

Day 2, Railay Beach climbing and the sunset longtail

The longtail from Ao Nang Pier to Railay West costs THB 120 per person each way. Boats depart when full, roughly every 15 to 20 minutes during peak hours from 07:00 to 18:00. We caught the 08:00 boat on our February trip and arrived at Railay West to find the beach nearly empty. By 10:30, three tour boats had unloaded at Railay East and the beach had tripled in visitors.

Rock climbing is the activity that separates Railay from every other Thai beach. The limestone karst walls that frame the beach are among the best climbing terrain in Southeast Asia. Beginners and experienced climbers both find routes on Railay Wall, the main beginner area visible from the beach path between Railay West and East.

Half-day guided climbing sessions depart at 09:00 and 13:00. The 09:00 session is the one to book. Heat builds from 10:30 onward and the afternoon session becomes uncomfortable by 14:00 in high season. We ran the 09:00 session in December with a group of six. The guide set three routes at varying difficulty on the main wall. The easiest route tops out at 12 meters. Book the morning climbing session via our activities partner.

After climbing, take the 20-minute jungle path from Railay West to the Railay viewpoint. The path starts at the south end of Railay East beach near the last resort. It involves scrambling up fixed ropes on a steep limestone section, which is easier than it looks from below. The viewpoint shows both beaches simultaneously with the karst behind them.

The sunset longtail back to Ao Nang departs at 17:30 and routes through the mangrove channel on the incoming tide. The channel is narrow, the mangrove canopy closes overhead, and the light filters green and gold for the 10 minutes it takes to pass through. We did not plan this route on the February trip. The boatman chose it based on the tide. It was the unexpected highlight of the day.

The Krabi coastline from the water. The limestone karst formations that frame Railay Beach extend across the entire Andaman coastline. Visibility runs 10 to 15 meters at the outer snorkel sites.

Day 3, Tiger Cave Temple, Emerald Pool, and the return

The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) sits 8 kilometers north of Krabi Town. The summit requires 1,237 steps up a steep concrete staircase carved into the limestone karst. The climb takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on fitness level. At the summit, a large golden Buddha and a footprint of the Buddha look out over the Krabi plain. We reached the top on the December trip at 07:40 with the mist still in the lowland paddies below. The view justified every step.

Start the Tiger Cave climb before 07:00. By 09:00 in high season, the staircase is congested and the sun reaches the exposed upper section. The monkeys at the base have learned to take food from visitors. Keep bags closed and do not eat near the staircase entrance. We lost a water bottle on the April visit to a particularly determined macaque on step 200.

The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) is a 90-minute drive from Tiger Cave, located inside the Khao Phanom Bencha National Park. The standard route visits the Crystal Pool first. The Crystal Pool is a smaller, cooler pool reached after a 1.5-kilometer boardwalk through the rainforest. The main Emerald Pool is 400 meters further. Both pools are fed by natural springs and reach a temperature of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius year-round.

Entry is THB 200. The park opens at 08:00. We arrived at 10:30 on the February visit and found moderate crowds at the main pool. The Crystal Pool was quieter because most visitors turn back after reaching the Emerald Pool without continuing to the smaller pool. For the best experience, visit the Crystal Pool first and return via the main pool as the crowds thin.

If your flight from KBV is at 18:00 or later, you have time for both Tiger Cave and the Emerald Pool with a lunch stop in Krabi Town between. The Tiger Cave temple complex at the base of the stairs has a food stall that opens at 07:00. We ate pad krapow moo (basil pork rice) there for THB 60 before beginning the climb on our last visit.

For the return transfer to KBV, book your return transfer and schedule pickup from Ao Nang no later than 2 hours before departure. The Krabi Airport road is clear in normal conditions but a single accident on the single-lane section near town can add 30 minutes.

Getting around Krabi by boat and songthaew

Krabi runs on two systems: longtail boats for coastal and island movement, and songthaews (shared pickup trucks) for road movement. Both are cheap and reliable in high season.

Longtail rates (2026 high-season pricing):

  • Ao Nang Pier to Railay West: THB 120 per person (shared, departs when full)
  • Ao Nang Pier to Phra Nang Cave Beach: THB 150 per person (shared)
  • Private charter Ao Nang to Railay: THB 700 to 900 per boat (capacity 8 people)
  • Inter-island transfers: booked through tour operators, usually included in day-tour price

Songthaew rates:

  • Ao Nang to Krabi Town: THB 60 per person (shared)
  • Krabi Town to Tiger Cave Temple: THB 40 per person (shared, departs when full from town center)
  • Krabi Town to Emerald Pool trailhead: THB 100 to 150 per person (shared, less frequent)

Check Krabi airport transfers and pre-book before arrival. For everything else, negotiate at the pier or flag a songthaew from the main road. Google Maps shows songthaew routes in Krabi but the timetables are not updated in real time.

What to watch for on your first Krabi trip

The chemical sunscreen ban at Phra Nang Cave Beach is real and enforced. Rangers stationed at the beach entrance check sunscreen bottles. If yours is not reef-safe, they will ask you to rinse off before entering the water. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) pass the check. Most brands in Thai pharmacies and 7-Eleven now label clearly. Buy before you leave Ao Nang.

Longtail pricing at the pier is negotiable. The standard shared-boat rate from Ao Nang to Railay West is THB 120 per person. Any boatman quoting THB 500 or more is pricing a private charter, not a shared seat. If you are a solo traveler or a couple, join the queue for the shared boat at the main pier rather than accepting the first quote you receive at the top of the ramp. The wait is rarely more than 15 minutes during daylight hours.

Tiger Cave heat is the variable most visitors underestimate. The 1,237 steps run across exposed limestone. In February and March the climb is manageable until 10:30. In April it becomes difficult after 09:00. If you are visiting in the shoulder months, start before 07:30. The base stall opens at 07:00 and water is available there.

The monkey population at Railay East has learned to open bags. Keep food sealed and zipped at all times on the eastern beach. We lost a bag of snacks to a macaque in under 10 seconds at the viewpoint platform in December.

Where to eat in Ao Nang and Railay

Ko Tung Restaurant on the Ao Nang beachfront road is the best seafood option in the area. We ordered the grilled barramundi and the steamed clams with garlic on the December visit. Total for two with beer was THB 680. The restaurant fills by 19:00. Arrive at 18:30 or book ahead by phone.

On Railay, the Last Bar at the east end of Railay East Beach is the place to watch the sun drop behind the karst. The bar serves Chang and Singha at standard beach prices. Food is basic: pad thai, chicken fried rice, and fruit shakes. The cocktail buckets are a Railay tradition but not required for the sunset. We sat on the deck on the February visit from 17:00 to 17:45 and counted 14 longtails crossing the bay in the last light.

For breakfast, the hotel breakfast at Rayavadee and Centara Ao Nang is included with most room rates. Budget travelers find everything they need at the 7-Eleven on the main Ao Nang road: protein snacks, instant coffee, boiled eggs, and fresh bread. It opens at 06:30, which makes it the only food option before the Tiger Cave climb.

Practicalities for planning your Krabi trip

The hotel choice in Krabi has more impact on the daily logistics than in most Thai destinations. Rayavadee puts you on Phra Nang Beach directly. Centara Ao Nang keeps you in the center of boat and tour departures. Tubkaak Beach is quieter with direct longtail access to the 4-Islands route.

For tour bookings, check available Krabi tours including the 4-Islands speedboat and Railay climbing. For ground transfers between Ao Nang, KBV airport, and the Krabi ferry pier, compare ground transfer options. Travel insurance with adventure sports coverage from EKTA starts at $1.20 per day.

Three days in Krabi is the right amount of time to do all three of these properly: the open-water 4-Islands circuit, the Railay limestone experience, and the altitude of Tiger Cave at first light. The 4:30am longtail from Ao Nang Pier on Day 1 makes it click. By Day 3 you have the rhythm of the place, the right boats, and the right pace. Come for the islands. Stay for the climbing. Leave via the Tiger Cave stairs at 06:00 and you will understand why the view from the top is the most reprinted image in Krabi. It is earned.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Krabi?
November through February is the dry season peak. The sea is calm, tours run daily, and temperatures are comfortable at 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. December and January are the most crowded months. March and April are hot but still dry. May through October brings rain and occasional rough seas that can cancel speedboat tours.
Is 3 days enough for Krabi?
Three days covers the core Krabi experience: the 4-Islands circuit, Railay Beach, Tiger Cave, and the Emerald Pool. For Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, or day trips to the Trang islands, add two to three more days. Most visitors who stay 3 days leave with a list of things they want to return for.
How do you get to Railay Beach?
Railay is surrounded by limestone cliffs and accessible only by boat. The longtail from Ao Nang Pier takes 15 minutes and costs THB 120 per person. Boats depart throughout the day when full. The last longtail back to Ao Nang leaves Railay West at approximately 18:00. Check the exact time with your boatman at the pier.
Is Tiger Cave accessible for all fitness levels?
The 1,237 steps require reasonable fitness and a willingness to stop and rest. There is no time limit. Older visitors and families with children complete the climb regularly. The steps are steep in sections but have handrails throughout. The main difficulty is heat: start before 07:30 to avoid climbing in full sun.
Does Krabi have good mobile connectivity?
Ao Nang has solid 4G coverage on both AIS and True Move H networks. Railay Beach has variable signal: Railay West gets 3 to 4 bars of AIS, Railay East is weaker. The 4-Islands sea route drops to no signal between islands. The Tiger Cave summit has intermittent AIS signal. Download offline maps before heading out.
